Lee Jackson est un de ces acteurs importants du Chicago blues de l'après-guerre qui reste injustement méconnu hors d'un cercle restreint d'amateurs.

           Bien qu'il ait affirmé être né en 1907 à Saint Louis, Warren George Harding Lee est né le 18 août 1921 à Gill, une bourgade de l'Arkansas. Lee a surtout été influencé par son oncle Alf Bonner, qui dirige un jug band très populaire localement, mais qui, en compagnie de son épouse Cora possède surtout un café. Situé entre Helena et Memphis, l'établissement voit se produire (et héberge aussi pour la nuit) la plupart des bluesmen des Etats voisins notamment le Memphis Jug band et Charlie Patton qui impressionnent particulièrement le jeune garçon. L'oncle Alf qui voit l'intérêt de son neveu pour la musique lui achète une guitare et il semble avoir joué avec le jug band familial quelque temps, profitant aussi des leçons données par les musiciens de passage, en particulier Too Tight Henry et Richard Taylor, un cousin de Robert Johnson (que Lee a aussi prétendu avoir connu) et qui a aussi migré et joué à Chicago.

           Quoi qu'il en soit, encore adolescent, George Harding Lee est un guitariste suffisamment aguerri pour embrasser une carrière de musicien professionnel sous le pseudonyme de Lee Jackson. Il est à Memphis (où il a aussi affirmé avoir enregistré?), en Floride, à Saint Louis où il joue avec Roosevelt Sykes (Sykes gravera d'ailleurs bien plus tard un superbe album pour Crown avec son ancien protégé à la guitare) et enfin Chicago où Jackson s'installe sans doute au début des années 40.

           Le style de guitare de Lee Jackson, notes précises, intonations jazzy, son brillant reflètent les années de jug band avec leur répertoire pop et swing et les multiples influences glanées au cours de ses rencontres. Il serait bien plus à comparer à un Robert Jr Lockwood qu'à un Jimmy Rogers. Bien que sa réputation de guitariste fiable, adaptatif, sérieux et ponctuel le fait demander dans les clubs de Chicago et sur le marché aux puces de Maxwell Street, Lee Jackson, après son premier mariage, prend un job bien rémunéré de mécanicien auto, travaillant dans de nombreux garages avant de s'installer à son compte.

           La musique sera donc pour lui forcément une activité secondaire. Il aurait enregistré pour Chess et Vee Jay mais jusqu'à présent on n'a aucune trace de démos ou d'acétates éventuels. Il est certainement le guitariste et le bassiste de bien plus de séances qu'on lui crédite généralement mais il n'enregistre en vedette qu'une poignée de titres pour Eli Toscano et Willie Dixon (sur le label Cobra le classique Fishin' in my pond), Cadillac Baby, Carl Jones...

           En 1970, il remplace au pied levé Johnny Shines pour la tournée de l'AFBF et grave deux titres sur l'album souvenir de cette tournée. Il aurait enregistré des albums en Allemagne ou au Danemark mais, là non plus, nous n'avons aucune trace tangible de ces disques.

           C'est en 1973 grâce à Al Smith qu'il va enfin concrétiser son rêve de faire un album sous son nom, l'excellent Lonely girl sorti sur Bluesway. En 1977, Lee enregistre une séance pour Ralph Bass mais le LP prévu ne verra jamais le jour et les titres paraîtront bien plus tard sur diverses anthologies.

           Ce sera trop tard pour que Lee Jackson les voie. Le 1^er juillet 1979, en rentrant d'un concert donné dans le North Side, il est en effet abattu par le fils de sa nouvelle épouse avec laquelle il venait d'avoir une dispute.

           Nous avons réuni ici la quasi totalité des titres que ce grand bluesman a gravés. Il reste sans doute un certain nombre d'inédits dans les tiroirs, en particulier chez Cobra...

           Lee Jackson is one important post war Chicago bluesmen who, unfortunately, is still largely unknown outside a circle of blues buffs all around the world.

           Although he had often said he was born 1907 in Saint Louis, the birth date of Warren George Harding Lee was August, 18^th, 1921 in Gill (Arkansas). The boy has been strongly influenced by his Uncle Alf Bonner and his Aunt Cora who led a jug band and also ran a café between Helena and Memphis in which about every bluesman of the neighbouring States played regularly. The young Lee was particularly impressed by the Memphis Jug Band, Charlie Patton, Too Tight Henry and Richard Taylor (a cousin of Robert Johnson who Lee said he had also known) who will live and play later in Chicago.

           After some very formative years playing with the Bonners' Jug Band, the young singer and guitarist tried his luck - under the nickname of Lee Jackson - as an itinerant musician, playing in Memphis, Florida, Saint Louis (with Roosevelt Sykes behind whom he will record a stunning LP in the 60's for Crown) and finally Chicago.

           The guitar style of Lee Jackson, sharp, jazzy, with sparse but brilliant and bluesy notes was quite original for the immediate post-war Chicago blues scene, reflecting his years playing with swinging jug bands. As he is also a serious, reliable and adaptative musician, Lee is quickly quite in demand in clubs and on the Maxwell Street Market. But, being now married, he chooses to take a steady and better paid job as an auto mechanic. The music will thus always be a side job for him.

           Anyway Lee appears in many studio sessions as a guitarist and bassist but he will record only a handful of sides under his name. He might have been recorded by Chess and Vee Jay but we don't have any track of this insofar. His first known 45 is for Eli Toscano's Cobra (the classic Fishing in my pond) and after that he would wax some very good tracks for Cadillac Baby, Carl Jones ....

           In 1970, Lee is part of the American Folk Blues Festival's European tour and records two sides for the occasion (for the Scout label). There are still rumours that he would have recorded at that time LPs in Denmark or in Germany but there is no evidence of that either.

           Lee will finally record his first full LP for Al Smith in 1973, the excellent Lonely girl issued onto the Bluesway label. Lee plays more and more on the Chicago North Side clubs and his reputation is growing among this new audience. In 1977, he records another LP for Ralph Bass and the T.K. label that won't never be issued as such, the tracks cropping up much later on several anthologies.

           But it would be too late for Lee who on July, 1^st, 1979 is shot to death by the son of his new bride with whom he was having an argument.
