JERRY Mc CAIN
Sa voix traînante et nasillarde, si
sudiste, son excellent jeu d'harmonica et ses grands talents de compositeur ont
fait de Jerry Mc Cain un des talents les plus originaux du blues sudiste. Né
près de Gasden (Alabama) le 19 juin 1930, Jerry a fui la métairie harassante de
ses parents en commençant très tôt à danser, chanter, jouer de l'harmonica
d'abord en compagnie du duo itinérant Chick & Shorty puis seul, au coin des
rues ou dans les cafés locaux comme le Will & Elmer's Cafe, accompagné du
guitariste Christopher Collins.
Des rencontres avec Rice Miller et
Little Walter ainsi que leurs disques le marquent fortement. En 1952 il
enregistre des démos puis une séance pour le label Trumpet de Lillian Mc
Murray: les classiques Wine o Wine et
East of the sun. Puis un contrat avec
le label Excello à Nashville ainsi qu'avec plusieurs labels comme Rex, Okeh ou
Jewel lui permettent d'obtenir quelques succès régionaux qui assoient sa
réputation, That's what they want, le
désopilant My next door neighbour et
la saga sudiste du chômeur fortuné, Welfare
Cadillac et Courtin' in the Cadillac.
Jerry Mc Cain se révèle là comme un remarquable compositeur à l'humour insolent
et amer. Deux instrumentaux, Red top et
728 Texas, à l'harmonica chromatique
sont aussi des succès locaux. Jerry figure alors au sein de plusieurs tournées
sudistes de grandes salles en compagnie de Freddie King, Otis Redding ou Rufus
Thomas. Mais il ne reste qu'une petite vedette régionale et il faudra la
reprise d'un de ses titres à la fin des années 1970, She's tuff par le groupe de blues-rock, les Fabulous Thunderbirds
pour qu'il perce enfin au niveau national. Il signe alors une série de beaux
albums pour Ichiban, Jericho, Boogie Down et Melody Maker dans lesquels il
démontre l'étendue de ses talents et de sa verve. Malgré une santé quelque peu
chancelante, Jerry Mc Cain restera toujours aussi jeune d'esprit et inventif
qu'à ses débuts jusqu'à sa mort le 28 mars 2012 dans sa ville de Gasden.

With
his drawling and nasal toned voice, his excellent harmonica playing and his
great original and witty compositions, Jerry Mc Cain has certainly been one of
the most original Southern bluesman. Born near Gasden (Al) on 19 June 1930,
Jerry has quickly fled the exhausting sharecropping cotton work of his parents
to try his luck as a musician, first with the Chick & Shorty duo, then solo
on the street corners and local clubs like the Will & Elmer's Cafe, backed
by a local band led by guitarist Christopher Collins.
Some
meetings with Rice Miller and Little Walter (and their records) strongly influenced
Jerry. In 1952, seeking for a recording contract and thanks to some self made
demos, Mc Cain waxed his first sides for the Trumpet label of the wise Lillian
Mc Murray, leading to some early classics like Wine o Wine and East of the
sun. During the 1950's and early 60's he regularly recorded for several
labels like Excello, Okeh, Rex, Jewel... obtaining frequent local hits as That's what they want, the funny My next door neighbour and the
controversial saga about the wealthy unemployed, Welfare Cadillac and Courtin'
in the Cadillac. He also enjoyed some success with driving instrumentals Red Top and 728 Texas
(on the chromatic) and thus toured with national acts Freddy King, Otis
Redding, Rufus Thomas.
But
it will take the end of the 70's and a cover version of one of his old tunes She's tuff by The Fabulous Thunderbirds
to help Jerry Mc Cain to get a national breakthrough. He would then appear at
big festivals, recording regularly excellent albums for Ichiban, Jericho, Boogie Down,
Melody Maker, demonstrating despite a shaky health the same witty, young spirit
until his death on 28 March 2012
in his Gasden home.
