Aujourd’hui bien oublié, Travis Blaylock a cependant connu durant les années 50 un certain succès commercial sous le nom de Harmonica Slim, ce qui lui a notamment valu d’être le seul Harmonica Slim sur le marché, les autres comme James Moore devant abandonner leur surnom Harmonica Slim pour celui de Slim Harpo et Richard Riggins (qui fera plusieurs très bons disques pour Fedora sous ce sobriquet) gardant son vrai patronyme.

            Travis Leonard Blaylock est né le 21 décembre 1934 à Douglassville, une bourgade de la frontière du Texas et de l’Arkansas, frontière que ses parents franchissent quelques années plus tard afin de s’installer dans la plus grande ville qu'est Texarkana. C’est vers l’âge de douze ans que Travis Blaylock commence à jouer de l’harmonica sous l’influence de plusieurs voisins ainsi que des disques de John Lee "Sonny Boy" Williamson. Il chante et joue avec un groupe de gospel local, les Sunny South Gospel Singers.

            Il se lie d'amitié avec le guitariste Martin Fulson (le frère de Lowell) et ils forment bientôt un petit groupe qui anime une émission radiophonique hebdomadaire sur la station KCMC de Texarkana.

            En 1949, Travis gagne Los Angeles et s'intègre très vite à l'importante et très vivace scène du blues et du R&B de cette époque, faisant notamment partie de l'orchestre de Lowell Fulson et Lloyd Glenn. Il enregistre d'abord comme harmoniciste de plusieurs séances de blues et de R&B californiens avant de fonder, sous le nom de Harmonica Slim, son petit orchestre qui comprendra aussi souvent le superbe pianiste Lloyd Glenn. Slim enregistre enfin en vedette une douzaine de titres entre 1954 et 1960 qui mélangent avec bonheur l'inspiration rurale du blues de la frontière texane avec des sons et des arrangements beaucoup plus sophistiqués qui dominent le R&B californien. Mary Helen et surtout You better believe it (qui pénètre dans le Top 100 R&B) sont de petits succès commerciaux qui permettent à Harmonica Slim de faire partie de grandes tournées de R&B qui sillonnent les Etats Unis, en compagnie de Lowell Fulson, Percy Mayfield, T-Bone Walker, Ray Charles, Pee Wee Crayton ou B.B. King.

            Mais les années 60 sont celles de vaches bien maigres pour Slim qui doit prendre un travail en usine pour vivre. A la fin de cette décennie, c'est T-Bone Walker qui le présente au producteur Bob Thiele qui accepte de lui faire enregistrer un album pour son label Bluestime en compagnie de musiciens de jazz et de R&B comme le saxophoniste Plas Johnson. Assez curieusement, Thiele qui a enregistré plusieurs fois George Smith trouve le jeu d'harmonica de Slim trop rural et "primitif" et décide que Smith au son bien plus urbain et jazzy tiendra la plupart des parties d'harmonica sur cet album, fort méconnu, mais qui possède de nombreuses qualités.

            Après le décès de son père en 1971, Harmonica Slim retourne s'occuper de sa mère à Texarkana. Il travaille comme pompiste mais joue régulièrement avec un orchestre local celui du guitariste Nelson Carson. Il enregistre avec eux pour Louis Guida en 1976 ses derniers titres dont certains demeurent inédits.

            Après la mort de sa mère, Harmonica Slim abandonne le blues, redevient Travis Blaylock, se tourne à nouveau vers le gospel et la religion. Il est même le Révérend de son église baptiste lorsqu'il décède le 16 juin 1984 à Texarkana.

Now well forgotten, Travis Blaylock however experienced during the 1950s some commercial success under the name Harmonica Slim, which even earned him to be the only Harmonica Slim on the market, forcing James Moore to abandon his Harmonica Slim nickname for Slim Harpo and Richard Riggins (who would make several very good albums for Fedora under this nickname later on) to keep his true surname. Travis Leonard Blaylock was born December 21, 1934 in Douglassville, a village of the Texas-Arkansas border, a border that his parents crossed a few years later to settle in the largest city of Texarkana. It was around the age of twelve that Travis Blaylock began playing the harmonica under the influence of several neighbors and the records of John Lee "Sonny Boy" Williamson. He sang and played with a local gospel group, the Sunny South Gospel Singers. He was a close friend with guitarist Martin Fulson (brother of Lowell) and they soon formed a small group who hosted a weekly radio show on station KCMC of Texarkana. In 1949, Travis moved to Los Angeles and integrated very quickly the important and very perennial scene of blues and R & B of that time, even becoming a part time member of the band of Lowell Fulson who included pianist Lloyd Glenn at that time. He recorded as a harmonica player with several West Coast sessions prior to founding, under the name Harmonica Slim, a small blues band which often included superb piano playing by Lloyd Glenn. During the 50's, Slim recorded a dozen titles between 1954 and 1960 that happily mixed Texas Country blues with arrangements much more sophisticated in the mould of the current R & B California sounds. "Mary Helen" and especially "You better believe it" (entering the Top 100 R & B) were small hits that allowed Harmonica Slim to be part of the great R & B tours crisscrossing the United States, in the company of Lowell Fulson, Percy Mayfield, T-Bone Walker, Ray Charles, Pee Wee Crayton and B.B. King. But the 1960s were lean years to Slim who had to take a job in the factory to make a living. At the end of the decade, T-Bone Walker brought Slim to producer Bob Thiele, who agreed to record a whole album for his label Bluestime in the company of jazz and R & B musicians like saxophonist Plas Johnson. Curiously enough, Thiele , (who recorded several times George Smith) found the style of Harmonica Slim too rural and "primitive" and decided to replace his blowing parts by those of Smith a much more urban and jazzy harpman that Slim. After the death of his father in 1971, Harmonica Slim returned to care for his mother at Texarkana. He worked in a gas station while playing regularly with the local band of guitarist Nelson Carson. He recorded with them for Louis Guida in 1976, some tracks remaining unissued.

            After the death of his mother, Harmonica Slim gave up the blues for good and was reborn Travis Blaylock, turned definitively to the gospel and the religion. He even became a Reverend of the local Baptist Church until his death on June 16, 1984 in Texarkana.

Depuis la première publication de cet article, plusieurs d'entre vous m'ont contacté en me donnant d'autres titres de Harmonica Slim qui ne se trouveraient pas dans cette "intégrale". Mais en fait, tous ces morceaux proviennent non pas de Travis Blaylock mais d'autres Harmonica Slim, en particulier Richard Riggins. Il y a deux autres musiciens au moins qui ont enregistré sous ce sobriquet: l'un dans les années 60 pour Blue Horizon, l'autre quelques titres live en 1985 en compagnie de Boogie Bill Webb. Ni l'un ni l'autre n'ont de rapport avec Blaylock qui est décédé en 1984 comme l'atteste la photo de sa pierre tombale.

Since I first posted this article, several readers have written to me giving tracks by Harmonica Slim that are not in this "complete recording works". Unfortunately, those are by other bluesmen taking the same nickname, particularly Richard Riggins who recorded quite extensively under this moniker during the 1990's. At least two other musicians have recorded under the Harmonica Slim nickname, (one for Blue Horizon, the other in 1985 three tracks live in New Orleans with Boogie Bill Webb). Neither of them are our man. Travis Blaylock died in 1984 and everything he has recorded is now here

Et voici le 13^ème volume de notre série consacrée aux blues du Texas.

             Commençons par le plus connu, Long John Hunter (John Thurman Hunter) qui a, dans la dernière partie de sa carrière, connu un certain succès et a enregistré plusieurs excellents albums pour Arhoolie et Black Magic. Né le 13 juillet 1931 à Ringold (LA), John écoute surtout de la Country Music avant de gagner Beaumont au Texas pour y travailler. C'est là qu'il rencontre B.B. King, forme un petit orchestre de blues avec Phillip Walker et enregistre pour le label Duke Crazy girl qui sera un hit local. Puis il s'installe à El Paso où il devient "le" bluesman de la ville, enregistrant pour des labels locaux une série de 45t influencés par Albert Collins et même Duane Eddy. Mais ces disques et la réputation de Long John restent cantonnés à la ville frontière d'El Paso. C'est son ami Phillip Walker qui va l'amener sur la scène internationale et lui permettre de participer à de très nombreux festivals. Il décède à Phoenix le 4 janvier 2016. Nous avons ici regroupé ses premiers singles.

            

 Louis"Blues Boy" Jones est né à Galveston (TX) le 28 avril 1931. Tout en exerçant plusieurs métiers comme infirmier (dans l'armée en Corée), marin pêcheur et ouvrier dans la construction navale, il a commencé à chanter du blues, jouant dans des clubs et enregistrant le petit succès Rock and roll bells en 1956. Cela lui a permis de faire partie de tournées de R&B, gravant une série de fort bons disques jusqu'en 1964. De retour à Galveston à la fin des années 60, Louis Jones a abandonné peu à peu la musique. Il est décédé le 27 juin 1984 à Galveston.

             Eugene "Texas" Ray est un chanteur et harmoniciste né le 28 septembre 1937 à Omaha, Texas. Sa carrière est substantiellement obscure. On le sait chanteur pour Gene Franklin & Spacemen et il a enregistré deux 45t en 1960 avant de resurgir avec un dernier disque en 1980 à Nashville où il travaillait alors comme gardien d'immeuble. Il est décédé à Electra, TX le 9 décembre 1993

             Enfin, faisons un petit saut dans le temps à San Antonio en 1937 où un certain Walter "Cowboy" Washington a enregistré une belle séance de quatre titres, accompagné au piano par le remarquable pianiste texan Andy Boy.

Let’s start with the best known from this selection, Long John Hunter (John Thurman Hunter), who, in the latter part of his career, enjoyed some success and recorded several excellent albums for Arhoolie and Black Magic. Born on July 13, 1931, in Ringgold, Louisiana, John listened mainly to country music before moving to Beaumont, Texas, to work. It was there that he met B.B. King, formed a small blues band with Phillip Walker, and recorded Crazy Girl for the Duke label, which hit locally. He then moved to El Paso, where he became “the” bluesman of the city, recording a series of 45s for local labels influenced by Albert Collins and even Duane Eddy. But these records and Long John’s reputation remained confined to the border town of El Paso. It was his friend Phillip Walker who brought him to the international stage and enabled him to participate in numerous festivals. He passed away in Phoenix on January 4, 2016. We have compiled his early singles here.

             Louis “Blues Boy” Jones was born in Galveston, Texas, on April 28, 1931. While working various jobs—including as a nurse (in the Army in Korea), a commercial fisherman, and a shipyard worker—he began singing the blues, performing in clubs and recording the minor hit Rock and Roll Bells in 1956. This led to him joining R&B tours, recordin a series of very good records until 1964. Returning to Galveston in the late 1960s, Louis Jones gradually gave up music. He died on June 27, 1984, in Galveston.

             Eugene “Texas” Ray was a singer and harmonica player born on September 28, 1937, in Omaha, Texas. His career is largely obscure. He is known to have sung for Gene Franklin & the Spacemen and recorded two 45s in 1960 before resurfacing with a final record in 1980 in Nashville, where he was then working as a custodian. He passed away in Electra, TX on December 9, 1993.

             Finally, let’s take a quick trip back in time to San Antonio in 1937, where a certain Walter “Cowboy” Washington recorded a fine four-song session, accompanied on piano by the remarkable Texan pianist Andy Boy.

J'ai entendu Hoodoo man blues par Lightnin' Slim sur un LP en 1965 et je l'ai quasiment toujours joué depuis. Nous l'avons enregistré avec David sur le premier opus de Herzhaft blues en 1991! Voici une nouvelle version 2026. Toutes les photos (moins une) sont © Gérard Herzhaft et prises durant mes séjours en Louisiane en 1982-83 et 1985 ou durant la tournée de Lightnin' Slim en Europe en 1973. I first heard “Hoodoo Man Blues” by Lightnin' Slim on an LP in 1965, and I've played it almost every day since. David and I recorded it for the first Herzhaft Blues album in 1991! Here's a new version from 2026. All photos (except one) are © Gérard Herzhaft and were taken during my stays in Louisiana in 1982–83 and 1985, or during Lightnin’ Slim’s European tour in 1973. K.C. Douglas (né à Sharon, Ms le 21 novembre 1913) a été un des très rares bluesmen du Mississippi à avoir émigré en Californie durant la guerre et à y avoir maintenu le style du Delta dont il était un représentant fidèle. K.C. a en effet bien connu et accompagné Tommy Johnson et a modelé autant son répertoire qu'une partie de son jeu de guitare sur lui. En Californie, Douglas fait équipe avec l'harmoniciste Sidney Maiden et enregistre en 1948 pour Bob Geddins Mercury boogie, un petit succès local qui deviendra un énorme tube à la fois dans le Rock (Steve Miller) que dans la Country Music (la superbe version qu'en a donnée Alan Jackson en 1992). Hélas, K.C. ne profitera que très peu de ce qui aurait pu lui valoir une vraie aisance financière. Malheureusement aussi, ce seul 78t ne sera suivi que par un seul single.

            Cependant, tout en travaillant dans la fonction publique locale, K. C. Douglas continue à jouer son brin de Country blues partout où il le peut. En 1954 ou 1952 (?), la chanteuse folk Barbara Dane remarque K.C. Douglas et le fait se produire dans les bars étudiants de Berkeley et dans son propre club, un des tout premiers bluesmen noirs à entrer dans ce circuit étudiant. C'est grâce à Barbara que Douglas enregistre son premier album qui ne sortira que sur un label australien (Cook!) et qui est ainsi devenu extrêmement rare.

            A la fin des années 50, K.C. devient un des favoris du public (essentiellement jeune, étudiant et blanc) du folk blues revival californien. C'est tout naturellement qu'il enregistre en 1960 pour le producteur Chris Strachwitz une longue séance qui paraîtra sur deux albums Bluesville: K.C.'s blues et Big road blues.

            A la fin des années 1960, K.C. s'associe avec l'excellent harmoniciste Richard Riggins (qui enregistrera sous le nom de Harmonica Slim: rien à voir avec Travis Blaylock que nous avons présenté dans ce blog). Un grandissime 45t en 1967 capture le duo au sommet de leur art.

            Une fois à la retraite, K.C. se consacre totalement à sa musique, monte un petit groupe (qui comprend l'excellent guitariste slide Ron Thompson) et se produit sur toutes les scènes blues de la Côte Ouest, notamment au San Francisco Blues Festival où sa présence, son dynamisme, son Delta blues authentique enthousiasment l'auditoire. Après deux 45t pour le petit label Blues Connoisseur, Chris Strachwitz enregistre fin 1973-début 1974 ce bel orchestre (Country blues) pour son label Arhoolie, éditant un des meilleurs disques de blues terrien de la décennie, avec des solos percutants de Thompson comme de Riggins et des compositions aussi mémorables que le vibrant My mind's going back in 1929.

            Même s'il était très casanier, K.C. avait accepté de venir jouer au Japon et en Europe mais il décède d'une crise cardiaque à son domicile de Berkeley le 18 octobre 1975.

            Cette compilation regroupe tous les enregistrements effectués par K.C. Douglas, une oeuvre majeure.

 K.C. Douglas (born in Sharon, Ms. on November 21, 1913) learned the blues through his association with the great Delta bluesman Tommy Johnson whose very style and repertoire he would always carry on. But unlike most Mississippian fellows who left for Saint Louis or Chicago, K.C. went for work to California, living in the Bay Area, one of the very few bluesmen to play the Delta style in this area during the 1940's. With the harmonica player Sidney Maiden, he waxed his own composition, Mercury boogie that won a little local success but was to become a smash hit years later for rock star Steve Miller and in 1992 a number 1 Country Hit for the driving version of this title by Alan Jackson. General Motors even used it as a commercial theme! Unfortunately, K.C. didn't benefit of that unexpected successes and had to work as a civil servant all his life while constantly playing his down home Mississippi blues wherever people wanted to hear it.

            In 1955, the activist and folk singer Barbara Dane took him under her wing. K.C. thus was one of the very first black bluesman able to play for the burgeoning California folk blues revival of the day. Thanks to Barbara, he even recorded as early as 1954 (or 1952) a whole album that was only issued on an Australian label!

            In 1961, Chris Strachwitz recorded with Douglas a mammoth session that ultimately was issued on two distinct albums (K.C.'s blues and Big Road blues) on the Bluesville label. In the late 60's, K.C. Douglas joined forces with the excellent harp player Richard Riggins (who recorded under the moniker Harmonica Slim: no relation with the other Harmonica Slim - Travis Blaylock - that we have featured on a previous post on this blog) and recorded some excellent 45s, notably Little Green house/ Things I'd do for you.

            After retiring from his daily job, K.C. became at last a full time musician, assembling a small band with Riggins and the very talented slide guitarist Ron Thompson. Everywhere he appeared K.C. took the audiences by storm with a strong stage presence and a down home authenticity the young blues fans were striving for at that time. After two notable 45 for the small local Blues Connoisseur label, K.C. and his band recorded in late 1973/ early 74 a whole album (Country blues) that stands as one of the best down home recording of that period.

            K.C. was quite reluctant to travel but was finally persuaded to do so and had to play his blues in Japan and Europe when he died of a sudden heart attack in his Berkeley home on October 18, 1975.

Né le 1er janvier 1918 à Vicksburg (Ms), Johnny Young a été un des très rares mandolinistes du blues de l'après-guerre. Il a développé sur cet instrument un style proche des guitaristes électriques. Excellent chanteur, voix chaude et expressive, il est aussi un guitariste rythmique très solide qui a contribué à la réussite de nombreux disques.

            Johnny apprend la mandoline avec son oncle Anthony Williams et écoute les disques des Mississippi Sheiks et de Charlie Mc Coy. A Memphis dans les années 30, Young fréquente Sleepy John Estes et Yank Rachell. Il s'installe à Chicago en 1940 et exerce ses talents au marché aux puces de Maxwell Street avec Floyd Jones, Snooky Pryor, Little Walter, Moody Jones et son cousin Johnny Williams. C'est avec ce dernier qu'il enregistre deux 78t en 1947-48 pour de minuscules labels comme Ora Nelle et Planet. Bien qu'il ne fasse plus de disque entre 1948 à 1963, Young demeure une figure familière des clubs du South Side et de Maxwell Street. C'est là que le trouve Pete Welding qui l'enregistre alors substantiellement pour son label Testament. Sa participation à la célèbre série Chicago/ The blues today lui permet de tourner en Amérique et en Europe pour le nouveau public du Blues Revival qu'il séduit par sa faconde, son dynamisme et sa rondeur bonhomme. De 1969 à sa mort d'une crise cardiaque à Chicago le 18 avril 1974, Young a fait partie de l'orchestre du pianiste Bob Riedy avec lequel il a enregistré de belles séances. Young a toujours dû gagner sa vie en dehors de la musique!

            Quelque peu oublié aujourd'hui, il a été un des pionniers du Chicago blues de l'après guerre et nous a légué une oeuvre importante en nombre et en qualité que nous proposons dans son intégralité ici.

A deep singer with a warm voice, he could also play a very solid and reliable rhythm guitar that made successful many sessions by him and his bluesmen friends.

            Johnny learned the mandolin with his uncle Anthony Williams, taking many ideas also from the Mississippi Sheiks and Charlie Mc Coy. He worked in Memphis in the 1930's and was then part of the musical scene, meeting Yank Rachell who showed him more tricks. Young went to Chicago in 1940 working in the industry (he will never be a full time musician) but playing during the week ends on Maxwell Street Market alongside Floyd and Moody Jones, Snooky Pryor, Little Walter and his own cousin Johnny Williams with whom he will be recording a couple of tracks for tiny labels in 1947-48. Although he won't record again until 1963, Young never gave up playing and was a mainstay of the Maxwell Street blues scene. This is where blues researcher and producer Pete Welding found him. Johnny then became a favorite of the coffeehouses, campuses and recorded quite extensively for Pete with many Chicago blues masters. His participation to the world wide acclaimed Chicago/ The blues Today series brought him more recognition and Johnny toured Europe several times.

            A sensitive and heartfelt man, Johnny Young was a member of the excellent Bob Riedey's blues band and made several more excellent albums until his death from an heart attack in Chicago on 18 April 1974.

            A little bit neglected today, Johnny Young has nevertheless been a true pioneer of the post-war Chicago blues and he leaves us a strong recorded legacy.

           Jadis quelque peu considéré uniquement comme un imitateur de Chuck Berry, Eddy Clearwater (né Eddie Harrington le 10 janvier 1935 à Macon, Ms de parents Noirs et Cherokees) est aujourd'hui reconnu à juste titre comme un des derniers grands représentants toujours actifs du Chicago blues traditionnel de l'après-guerre.

           Il est vrai que Clearwater a été aussi prolifique et versatile dans sa vie que dans sa musique: plongeur, videur, chauffeur de taxi, éducateur, producteur, éditeur de disques mais toujours musicien, Eddy Clearwater a aussi pratiqué toutes sortes de musiques, des blues profonds à la Country Music, du Rockabilly au Gospel, etc... Il cite d'ailleurs parmi ses influences marquantes Hank Williams, Louis Jordan, Muddy Waters ou Chuck Berry.

           Il arrive à Chicago en 1950 après un passage à Birmingham (Alabama) ou il a joué et chanté dans plusieurs groupes de Gospel. A Chicago, il est hébergé et influencé par son oncle Houston Harrington, un amateur (et bientôt fondateur des disques Atomic-H) de blues grâce auquel il connaît de nombreux autres jeunes bluesmen comme Otis Rush, Magic Sam, Morris Pejoe.. ainsi que son cousin l'harmoniciste Carey Bell Harrington.

           A partir de 1953, c'est sous le nom de Guitar Eddy qu'il entame une carrière de musicien sur le marché aux puces de Maxwell Street ainsi que dans les bars de Chicago. C'est sur le label de son oncle (et sous le surnom de Clear Waters pour concurrencer Muddy Waters!) qu'il enregistre ses premiers disques en 1958, en particulier le savoureux Hillbilly blues qui est un petit succès dans le classement Country local!. Mais c'est son A minor Cha Cha, un instrumental très inspiré de Jody Williams qui lui vaudra l'attention des fans de blues du monde entier.

          

En 1959, Clearwater contacté par Eddie Blazonczyck (1941-2011: un immigré polonais qui deviendra un nom majeur de la musique américano-polonaise), devient le guitariste noir (une rareté à l'époque même à Chicago) du groupe (blanc) de Rock'n'roll que fonde Blazonczyck et trois amis sous le nom de Eddy Bell and The Hill Boppers qui deviendront très vite les Belairs (ou Bel-Airs). Clearwater enregistre substantiellement avec Eddy Bell, démontrant sa capacité à émuler les guitaristes de Rockabilly, ce qui lui vaut d'ailleurs toujours une certaine aura dans ces cercles.

           Parallèlement, il continue à jouer du blues sous son nom dans les bars de Chicago, enregistrant sporadiquement des 45t pour de petits labels sans grande distribution.

           Ce n'est en fait qu'en 1973-74 et son association avec le pianiste Bob Riedy qu'Eddy Clearwater peut réellement développer sa propre carrière de bluesman. Il enregistre de magnifiques albums comme The Chief pour Rooster, le label de Jim O'Neal avant de graver d'autres excellents disques pour Delmark, MCM, Charly, Blind Pig, Bullseye...

           Cette visibilité lui permet de participer à de nombreuses tournées européennes où son dynamisme, la qualité de sa musique, son jeu de guitare et son sens de la scène lui assurent un constant succès.

           Nous avons ici regroupé la quasi-totalité des premiers 45t qu'il a enregistrés avant ses premiers albums jusqu'en 1979 auxquels nous avons ajouté certains des disques gravés en compagnie de Eddy Bell.

 At first, pigeonholed as a simple Chuck Berry's impersonator, Eddy Clearwater (born Eddie Harrington from Cherokee and African American parents on January, 10th 1935 at Macon, Ms) is justly hailed today as one of the last performing masters of the post-war Chicago blues.

           It's true that Eddy has been as versatile in his life than in his music: dishwasher, bouncer, cab driver, teacher, producer and of course musician... Eddy has also played a lot of musical styles with the same ease, whether Rockabilly, Country Music, Gospel than deep Chicago blues.

           After a stint in Birmingham (Alabama) where he seemed to have played and sung with local Gospel groups, Eddy reaches Chicago in 1950 where he is welcomed by his eccentric uncle Houston Harrington who is also a staunch blues fan and soon blues producer who will create his famed label Atomic-H. Through Houston, Eddy meets and befriends with Otis Rush, Magic Sam, Morris Pejoe, Sunnyland Slim as well as his own cousin, future harmonica ace, Carey Bell Harrington. Eddy learns a lot with and from them as well as listening to R'n'R records, particularly Chuck Berry's.

           He starts to play in clubs and on Maxwell Street under the nickname Guitar Eddy that Uncle Houston will soon turns into Clear Waters, then Clearwater to match with Muddy Waters' popularity! It's also on his uncle's new label Atomic-H that in 1958 Eddy waxes his first 45s, particularly Hillbilly blues which stirs some interests in the Country & Western local circles. But this is the top instrumental A minor Cha Cha (largely derived from Jody Williams) that draws the attention of the blues buffs from around the world, still a classic!

           In 1959, probably through the reputation of Hillbilly blues, Clearwater is approached by Eddie Blazonczyck (1941-2011: a recent polish migrant who will become one of the top names of "Polka" music) who is launching his own Rock'n'roll band, Eddy Bell and The Hill Boppers who will soon turn into Eddy Bell and the Bel-Airs. To be an African American musician with an all-white band is certainly very seldom viewed at that time! Clearwater will then play and record regularly with this successful R'n'R band, demonstrating his skills as a Rockabilly guitarist which earns him a reputation among Rockabilly fans up to this day.

           He anyway manages to play also blues under his name into Chicago clubs and records some 45s for very small labels with poor distribution. He will have to wait until the early 70's and an association with the Bob Riedy's blues band to become a well-known Chicago blues name. He records a wonderful album for Jim O'Neal (The Chief) then a large number of generally excellent LPs and CD's for Blind Pig, Delmark, Charly, MCM, Bullseye... He also tours Europe quite often, gaining a large following thanks to his excellent music, guitar playing and dynamic stage presence.

           We have been able to gather all his early recordings to which we have added some of the titles he made with Little Eddy and the BelAirs.
