TRIBUTE TO JLH

 TRIBUTE TO JOHN LEE HOOKER

On My YouTube Channel

I saw John Lee Hooker perform live time and again starting in the 1960s. He was a legendary bluesman who returned to Europe countless times. I had the chance to interview him in Washington at his (very modest) hotel while he was performing solo at a club in Georgetown, as he could no longer afford to pay for a band. He was a man of few words but warm and delighted to be appreciated. I wrote the very first biography of Mr. John Lee. I composed this “Tribute” upon Hooker’s death, and we’ve played it at nearly all of our concerts.

JOHN LEE HOOKER with EDDIE KIRKLAND

An anthology of nearly all the tracks recorded by John Lee Hooker with Eddie Kirkland, his most frequent (and most loyal) accompanist

  6. Hi Gerard, Thank you so much for the excellent tribute. So many memories surfaced again. I probably got to see him first in Basel during the AMFB Festival 1962. I got to share this! As I had organized a Memphis Slim concert just a few months before, (I was 18 years old at the time...) I was allowed backstage. John Lee was a little lost with all those foreign speaking people around, so he was pretty happy for any help. In fact with all those fans asking for autographs, he was kind of lost as he could not write well and fast enough at the time. As he had seen I could imitate his signature quite well, he handed over a pile of LPs and asked me to sign them on his behalf! Which I did. So fans don't be mad at me if you have any of those, Almost impossible to tell the difference. Ant this was only the first of our encounters...Franco
