TALL PAUL HANKINS/ Complete Recordings

            La présence de Tall Paul Hankins dans notre dernier Chicago/ The Blues Today a engendré un certain intérêt parmi les lecteurs de ce blog, ce qui m'a poussé à faire davantage de recherches sur ce musicien jusqu'ici très peu documenté. Parallèlement, nos amis Benoit Blue Boy, Lex Jansen et particulièrement Steve Wisner nous ont fourni des copies des titres encore manquants et même un 45t de 1963 qui n'est pas présent dans l'excellente "Blues Discography".

            Paul Vernon Hankins est né le 20 mars 1937 à Fairhope, Alabama, une petite ville côtière non loin de Mobile. Il apprend la musique et en particulier le piano à la Baldwin County Training School et commence à jouer très jeune dans différents orchestres locaux. Paul gagne Chicago dans les années 1950, se marie avec une amie d'enfance Edith Lillian Parnell (1936-2010) et fonde une maison de disques tout en s'imposant avec son orchestre composé des frères Hudson comme un excellent pianiste de organiste aussi à l'aise dans le jazz, le blues que plus tard la Soul et le Funk. Durant les années 1960, il est fréquemment dans les studios, enregistrant comme sideman pour différents bluesmen comme Earl Hooker, Bobby Saxton, Freddy Robinson, Lillian Offit mais sous son nom plutôt comme un organiste dans la veine d'un Jimmy Smith.

           

Lassé de la vie trop trépidante et criminogène de Chicago, "Tall" Paul Hankins décide de regagner son Alabama natal avec sa famille désormais nombreuse au début des années 1970. Paul se tourne de plus en plus vers la religion et, avec les années, il utilise surtout son grand talent d'organiste auprès de son église, la Twin Beech AME Zion Church à Fairhope. Il décède le 18 décembre 2010.

            Keyboardist Tall Paul Hankins' presence in the last issue of our Chicago/ The Blues Yesterday series has stirred a quick and strong interest among readers of this blog who are essentially hard blues buffs! As our friends Benoit Blue Boy, Lex Jansen and particularly Steve Wisner provided the missing tracks and even an hitherto unknown 45t from 1963 (for the short lived Bill Tyson's label Ty-Do) it so finished to convince me to search more and deeper about this great musician who stayed largely undocumented insofar.

            Paul Vernon Hankins was born in Fairhope, Alabama, a small town of 15.000 on the Gulf Coast, not far from Mobile, on 20^th March 1937. Paul started to learn the music and the piano while attending the Baldwin County Training School. As a teenager, he began to play in several local bands. To get more opportunities, Hankins came to Chicago during the late 1950's. He soon married Edith Lillian Parnell (1936-2010), a childhood friend. At ease whether playing blues, jazz, Soul and Funk, Paul Hankins displayed his great talents as a pianist and organist with many Chicago bands, in clubs and in studios. Forming his own band composed of good sidemen like the Hudson Brothers, Paul recorded a lot behind people like Earl Hooker, Bobby Saxton, Freddy Robinson or Lillian Offit and under his name, mostly as an organist in the Jimmy Smith's mould with a striking downhome touch.

            With a large family and tired of the hectic and sometimes dangerous Chicago life, "Tall" Paul Hankins decided to go back to his native Alabama during the early 70's. A religious man, he dedicated more and more his organ and piano playing to his Fairhope's Twin Beech AME Zion Church. He died in Fairhope on 18 December 2010.

            More details about the life and the music of this great musician would be most welcomed.

Pour ce 16ème volume de notre série, mettons l'accent sur des musiciens qui, entre blues, jazz et Soul et funk naissants, ont accompagné des bluesmen mais ont surtout enregistré sous leur nom des pièces instrumentales qui rencontraient alors les faveurs des jeunes Africains-Américains.

            "Tall" Paul Hankins (né à

Mobile dans l'Alabama le 20 mars 1937) est le pianiste/organiste de nombre de séances de blues derrière Earl Hooker, Bobby Saxton, Freddy Robinson, Lillian Offit.... Il a gravé en vedette une douzaine de titres dans la veine d'un Jimmy Smith, souvent accompagné du guitariste Willie Hudson qui chante sur un blues. Je n'ai que très peu d'informations sur cet excellent claviériste. Actuellement, j'essaie d'en glaner quelques unes auprès de sa petite-fille?

           

Perry & The Harmonics est un orchestre formé par le saxophoniste Clarence Perry (qui a enregistré avec Roosevelt Sykes, Ella Fitzgerald, etc...) et le pianiste et chanteur Ed Townsend (1929-2003) qui est surtout connu comme compositeur et producteur chez Mercury, Vee Jay, Capitol, Scepter de grands noms depuis Marvin Gaye jusqu'à Etta James, Big Maybelle ou Dee Dee Warwick. Le seul album (un "collector" jamais réédité) de Perry & The Harmonics, Intrigue with Soul, paru en 1965, est composé de titres entièrement inspirés des James Bond de l'époque dont l'irrésistible Do the Monkey with James. Nous présentons ici les titres les plus bluesy de cet album mais, pour ceux qui aiment le Jazz Soul de cette époque, tout est très réussi.

            E. Rodney Jones (1927-2004) était un acteur de cinéma (Mahogany, Three the hard way), propriétaire du célèbre club Burning Spear Lounge avec Pervis Spann et surtout un DJ très populaire à Chicago où sa voix de baryton, chaude et insinuante, son courrier des auditeurs et ses choix musicaux drainaient de fortes audiences sur la station WVON. Rodney Jones a enregistré une poignée de 45t sous son nom, en compagnie de musiciens de premier plan qu'il avait réunis pour l'occasion, en particulier le remarquable guitariste Larry Blasingaine qui enregistrera avec les Jackson Five, Jackie Wilson ou les Emotions...

            With this 16th opus of our Chicago/ The Blues Yesterday series, we are drifting a little bit outside the hardcore blues for those (still very bluesy) organ-piano-guitar-saxophone instrumentals between jazz, blues, Soul and early Funk which were so popular among the African-Americans during the 1960's.

            "Tall" Paul Hankins (born 20th of March 1937 in Mobile, Alabama) is the keyboardist of numerous sessions, particularly behind Earl Hooker, Bobby Saxton, Lillian Offit, Freddy Robinson, etc... He also recorded a dozen titles under his name in a vein similar to Jimmy Smith or Mc Griff who were enjoying a lot of success at that time. Backing him on lead guitar, Willie Hudson is also featuring here singing a good blues. I still try to gather more infos on Hankins.

            Perry & The Harmonics was a band formed by sax player Clarence Perry (who recorded with Roosevelt Sykes or Ella Fitzgerald) and singer/pianist Ed Townsend (1929-2003) better known as a producer, composer and A&R man at Mercury, Vee Jay, Capitol, Scepter for big names like Marvin Gaye, Etta James, Big Maybelle or Dee Dee Warwick. Their only album (a true "collector" never reissued) Intrigue with Soul from 1965 is entirely made of titles inspired by the James Bond films of the era (with Sean Connery) with the driving irresistible Do the Monkey with James. If we are featuring here the bluesiest tracks for this compilation, all the album is first rate and should please everyone with a taste for Jazz Soul.

           

E. Rodney Jones (1927-2004) was an actor (Mahogany, Three the hard way) and co-owner with Pervis Spann of the legendary Chicago club, The Burning Spear. Moreover he was a famous Chicago DJ on WVON radio station whose warm baritone voice, listeners' requests and his musical choices attracted strong audiences during more than a decade during the 1960's and 70's. Rodney Jones has also recorded a handful of singles under his name, gathering for the occasion some of the best young Chicago musicians, particularly the remarkable lead guitarist Larry

Blasingaine who would record and tour with the Jackson Five, Jackie Wilson or The Emotions.

  Ouvrons ce deuxième volume dédié au Texas Blues avec James "Thunderbird" Davis (né le 10 novembre 1938 à Mobile, Al), un chanteur un temps associé à Guitar Slim (Eddie Jones) avec lequel il a partagé la scène en Louisiane et au Texas. A la fin des années 50, James s'installe à Houston et commence une carrière personnelle, enregistrant 10 titres pour Duke  dont What else is there to do et surtout Blue monday ont connu un certain succès commercial. En 1966, James Davis tourne à travers tous les USA avec Joe Tex puis O.V. Wright mais s'oriente vers la religion au milieu des années 1970 et abandonne la musique. Redécouvert par hasard par Hammond Scott, Davis a enregistré un excellent album en 1988 pour Black Top Check Out Time. Il entame ainsi une deuxième carrière mais décède d'une crise cardiaque sur scène à Saint Paul (Minnesota) le 24 janvier 1992.

            Elmore Nixon (né le 17 novembre 1933 à Crowley, La) est surtout connu des amateurs de blues pour son magnifique jeu de piano derrière Lightnin' Hopkins, Clifton Chenier et de nombreux autres artistes du Texas. Mais il a substantiellement enregistré sous son nom dans un style très R&B entre 1949 et 1955. Il est décédé à Houston le 11 décembre 1973

            Enfin le saxophoniste, flûtiste et compositeur Harold Bennett (né le 7 août 1939 à Houston, Tx) a participé à de très nombreuses séances d'enregistrement de jazz et de R&B, notamment derrière Teddy Reynolds, Johnny Copeland, Bobby Bland, Sam Cooke et B.B. King), figuré dans plusieurs orchestres et animé les soirées des principaux clubs de Houston. Nous proposons ici quelques uns de ses titres les plus blues, gravés sous son nom pour le petit label Copa.

            This 2nd volume of our Texas Blues series starts with James "Thunderbird" Davis (born 10 November 1938 in Mobile, Al), a singer at first associated with Guitar Slim (Eddie Jones) for whom he opened the shows in Louisiana and Texas. At the end of the 1950's, James settled in Houston and started a personal career, recording ten tracks for Duke, hitting the charts with What else is there to do and Blue Monday. In 1966, James Davis was constantly on tour throughout the USA with Joe Tex and O.V. Wright. But during the mid-1970's, he became a preacher and stopped singing the blues. Rediscovered in 1988 by Black Top's Hammond Scott, James recorded a very good album Check Out Time and resumed his career. But he died of a heart attack on stage at Saint Paul (Minnesota) on January, 24th 1992.

            Elmore Nixon (born in Crowley, La. on 17 November 1933) is well known by the blues fans for his striking piano work behind Lightnin' Hopkins, Clifton Chenier and numerous other Texas artists. But he also recorded quite substantially under his name in a R&B vein between 1949 and 1955. He died in Houston on December 11th, 1973 after surgery.

            At last, saxophonist, flute player and composer Harold Bennett (born 7th August 1939 in Houston, Tx) has been very active in the studios, recording behind dozens of blues, R&B and jazz artists like Teddy Reynolds, Johnny Copeland, Bobby Bland, Sam Cooke, B.B. King.... He was a mainstay of several Houston clubs. He also recorded under his name and here are some of his most honking bluesy titles, waxed for the tiny Copa label.

            The missing titles are in purple and any copy would be welcomed!

            Allons au Texas maintenant!

            Le guitariste et chanteur de funk et soul Chuck Edwards a aussi gravé un certain nombre de titres et d'instrumentaux blues et soul que nous présentons ici. Né Charles Edward Edwins le 29 novembre 1926 à Pittsburgh ou Philadelphie (Pennsylvanie), il fait partie de l'orchestre de Sonny Thompson avec lequel il enregistre avant d'entreprendre une carrière sous son nom, gravant à partir de 1953 plusieurs 45t pour Duke, instrumentaux, blues et ballades. Souvent sollicité par le label de Houston, Chuck partage son temps entre le Texas et Pittsburgh durant quelques années, fondant son label Rene avec lequel il connait son principal succès Downtown Soulville. Chuck Edwards gagne San Francisco dans les années 1970 et forme avec sa famille The Edwards Family puis The Edwards Generation qui enregistrent dans un style plus Soul et Funk jusqu'à son décès le 17 juillet 2001 à Daly City (Californie).

            Texas Johnny Brown (né John Reilly Brown à Ackerman, Ms le 22 février 1928) a appris la guitare très jeune avec son père. Il s'installe à Houston et est fortement influencé par T-Bone Walker et Gatemouth Brown. Il participe à de nombreuses séances d'enregistrement (de Junior Parker et Bobby Bland sur Duke notamment) ainsi que sous son nom dès 1949, gravant une poignée de 45t très ancrés dans le Texas blues très jazzy de l'époque. Ne pouvant vivre de sa musique, Johnny Brown a délaissé studios et clubs pendant deux décennies avant de profiter du blues revival des années 1990 pour faire une deuxième carrière qui lui permet de se produire dans de nombreux festivals et d'enregistrer deux excellents albums. Il décède le 1er juillet 2013 à Houston.

            Bud Harper est un chanteur originaire de San Antonio, se produisant avec des groupes locaux comme Mike and the Bel Airs ou Spot Barnett et même Doug Sahm. "Big" Bud Harper a été un émule crédible de Bobby Bland comme on peut l'entendre ici dans la plupart des titres. Bud Harper - qui ne doit pas être confondu avec E.J. Buddy Harper qui a aussi enregistré sous le nom de Sonny Harper à Los Angeles - a lui enregistré une poignée de 45t entre blues et Soul pour des labels texans, accompagné de plusieurs excellents guitaristes dont l'un évoque Wayne Bennett. Harper a apparemment fait toute sa carrière à San Antonio

            Better known as a Funk & Soul guitarist, Chuck Edwards (Charles Edwards Edwins) has nevertheless recorded a fair number of blues or bluesy tracks. Born in Pittsburgh or Philadelphia (Pa) on 29 November 1926, Chuck plays the guitar with Sonny Thompson (with whom he would record) before starting a personal career from 1953, waxing many 45s for the Duke or his own Rene labels, mixing blues, guitar instrumentals and ballads, obtanining a hit with Downtown Soulville in the late 1960's. He has for a while lived in Houston, playing in the clubs and participating to many Duke sessions. During the early 70's, Chuck and his family settled in San Francisco, playing and recording mostly Funk as a family group as The Edwards Family and The Edwards Generation all around the Bay Area. Chuck died in Dale City (Ca) on July, 17th 2001.

            Texas Johnny Brown (born John Reilly Brown in Ackerman, Ms on 22 February 1928) was taught the guitar by his bluesman father. Coming to Houston during the 1940's, Johnny Brown was strongly influenced by the jazzy texan style of T-Bone Walker and Gatemouth Brown. He has played on many sessions for the Duke label behind Junior Parker and Bobby Bland as well as under his name from 1949. For economical reasons he had to make a living outside music for several decades but resumed his career thanks to the blues revival of the 1990's, staging on many festivals in the US and Europe and recordings two excellent albums. Brown died in Houston, 1st July 2013.

            Bud Harper is a blues shouter from San Antonio where he sung with several local bands like Mike & The Bel Airs, Spot Barnett and even Doug Sahm. "Big" Bud Harper (who must not be confused with Los Angeles' E.J. Buddy "Sonny" Harper) has recorded a handful of 45s in the Bobby Bland's style for local labels backed by some excellent musicians, one guitarist sounding very much like Wayne Bennette.

Ce nouveau volume de notre série "Chicago/ The blues yesterday" commence avec l'harmoniciste et chanteur Eddie Burks. Né sur la plantation Rising Sun, Ms le 17 septembre 1931, Eddie a appris l'harmonica sous l'influence de Sonny Boy Williamson (Rice Miller) et le blues avec le deuxième mari de sa mère qui était un bluesman local de quelque renommée. Venu à Chicago en 1946, il travaille en usine mais joue régulièrement le blues dans des clubs et surtout sur le marché aux puces de Maxwell Street (d'où son surnom "Jewtown" Burks) en compagnie de Jimmy Dawkins ou Eddie Shaw. C'est surtout après 1990 que Eddie Burks s'est fait connaître avec plusieurs excellents albums comme Vampire woman, obtenant même un petit succès avec sa composition Sugar Hill blues. Il est décédé à Chicago le 27 janvier 2005. Nous proposons ici les quelques 45t qu'il a enregistrés dans les années 1970 et qui sont peu connus.

            Bonnie Lee (Jessie Lee Freals) (née le 11 janvier 1931 à Bunkie, La) est une chanteuse importante du Chicago blues qui a enregistré plusieurs excellents albums pour Airway, Black Beauty, Paris Album, Delmark ou Wolf. D'abord au Texas où elle a fait partie de tournées itinérantes, puis à Chicago dans les années 1950, Bonnie a chanté et dansé dans les clubs (y compris comme go-go dancer sous le nom de Bonnie Bombshell) avant d'être prise en main par Sunnyland Slim qui l'a véritablement révélée au public du blues. Elle décède le 7 septembre 2006 à Chicago. Nous avons ici regroupé ses premiers 45t.

            Enfin, pour répondre à plusieurs demandes, nous avons ici inclus l'oeuvre complète de Arthur "Big Boy" Spires. Né en 1906 ou 1912 à Yazoo City, Ms, Spires a joué très jeune dans les juke joints locaux son brin de Delta blues influencé par Tommy Johnson avant de venir à Chicago en 1943 et de faire partie de ce groupe de jeunes bluesmen qui allaient définir le nouveau Chicago blues orchestral et électrique. En 1952, Spires enregistre pour Chess un magnifique 78t One of these days/ Murmur low qui demeure un des grands classiques du Chicago blues de cette époque. Mais le succès commercial n'est pas au rendez-vous et Arthur Spires n'enregistrera plus que deux séances en 1953 et 1954. Continuant de se produire sur Maxwell Street, Spires est redécouvert par Pete Welding qui lui fera enregistrer de quoi publier un LP. Malheureusement un seul titre a été, à ce jour, édité. Spires décède le 22 octobre 1990 à Chicago

            This new volume of our "Chicago/ The blues Yesterday" series starts with singer and harp player Eddie Burks. Born on the Rising Sun, Ms plantation on 17th September 1931, Eddie has learned the blues under the tutelage of his stepfather who played guitar in local juke joints and the harmonica after he saw Sonny Boy Williamson (Rice Miller). After he went to Chicago in 1946, Eddie made a living mainly outside the music but nevertheless played his blues on clubs and particularly on Maxwell Street flea market (hence his nickname "Jewtown" Burks). He really began to be well known during the 1990's when he recorded several very good CDs like Vampire woman, even having a local hit with his excellent own-penned Sugar Hill blues. Eddie died in Chicago, 27 January 2005. We have gathered here the handful of titles he has recorded during the 1970's, several being very hard to find.

            Bonnie Lee (Jessie Lee Freals) (born 11 January 1931 at Bunkie, La) is a well known blueswoman who recorded many excellent LP's and CD's for Airway, Black Beauty, Paris Album, Delmark or Wolf. After touring Texas singing and dancing with some itinerant shows, Bonnie settled in Chicago in the 1950's and appeared frequently as a singer and dancer (under the evocative nickname Bombshell Bonnie!). Sunnyland Slim took her under his wing and allowed her to really start a blues career. She died in Chicago on 7th September 2006. Here are all her first 45s.

            At last - and to respond to several requests - we have included here the complete recordings of Arthur "Big Boy" Spires. Born in 1906 or 1912 in Yazoo City, Ms, Spires has played the guitar and sung his brand of blues, strongly influenced by Tommy Johnson, in local juke joints before going to Chicago in 1943. He was then one of the young bluesmen from the Delta who helped to define the new, tough, electric post war Chicago blues. In 1952, Spires recorded for Chess his masterpiece One of these days/ Murmur low. Unfortunately, the commercial success eluded him and after two more sessions the following years he more or less disappeared from the musical scene, playing only sporadically in the Maxwell Street flea market. This is where Pete Welding re-discovered him. Spires then recorded for Welding enough material for a whole LP but unfortunately only one track has been issued insofar. Arthur died in Chicago 22 October 1990.
